Independent van drivers and fleet operators across the UK could save over £500 a year simply by adopting more efficient driving habits, according to new data from road safety charity IAM RoadSmart. Alongside the financial savings, these small behavioural changes can also help reduce carbon emissions and improve public perceptions of van drivers. The findings, based on feedback from 4,500 participants who took part in IAM RoadSmart’s ‘Driving for Work’ training, reveal that a single van driver could cut fuel costs by approximately £539 annually. One In Three Drivers Ignores Safety Assistance Features Research from IAM RoadSmart has revealed that a third (33%) of drivers never utilise safety assistance systems such as cruise control or collision warnings, raising concerns about road safety. The findings, published in the 2024 Road Safety Report by the road safety charity, are based on a survey of 2,008 drivers. Among six key driver assistance technologies, including collision warnings, cruise control and speed alerts, only 25% of respondents reported using these systems regularly or often. Two Drivers Caught Watching YouTube While Driving Two motorists were caught watching YouTube videos on their mobile phones during Operation Tramline last month. Supported by National Highways, the operation saw police using an HGV tractor unit to monitor offences committed by lorry drivers on major roads. During a five-day operation from 1st to 8th March, Norfolk Police stopped 132 vehicles and detected over 130 offences while patrolling the A47 and A11. Plug-in Van Grant Extended Until April 2026 Fleets looking to transition to electric vehicles will continue to receive financial support, as the plug-in van grant has been extended for another year. Changes To Driving Licence Rules For Electric Vans The Government is updating driving licence regulations to ensure that heavier electric vans have the same allowances as their petrol and diesel equivalents. On February 25, the Department for Transport (DfT) introduced secondary legislation in Parliament that will permit Category B licence holders to operate zero-emission vehicles weighing up to 4.25 tonnes.
